Chitosan is a natural, safe, and cost-effective biopolymer derived from amino-deoxy-D-glucose, produced through the de-acetylation of chitin. Chitin is the primary component of the exoskeletons of arthropods, such as lobsters, shrimp, and crabs, as well as insects and fungi cell walls. It is the second largest renewable carbon source after lignocellulosic biomass. Due to its affordability, biodegradability, non-toxicity to the environment, and biocompatibility, chitosan is an ideal resource for sustainable agriculture, enhancing soil health, and boosting crop growth and yield. Additionally, it is increasingly utilized in cosmetics, food, animal feed, and medicine.
However, chitosan’s limited solubility in water poses challenges to its use and agricultural effectiveness. Chitosan oligosaccharide, or oligo-chitosan, is a smaller polymer derivative, containing fewer than 30 amino-glucose molecules and a molecular weight of less than 3000 Daltons. This is achieved through the enzymatic hydrolysis and truncation of chitosan. The low molecular weight of oligochitosan makes it water-soluble, offering ease of use, enhanced bioavailability, compatibility, and improved functional efficacy.

FAQs
Q: What is chitosan oligosaccharide?
A: Chitosan oligosaccharide, a.k.a oligochitosan, is enzymatically degraded chitosan, with lower molecular weight and higher solubility in water. It is a newer generation of chitosan for better efficacy and easier application.
Q: Can oligo-chitosan be used together with common fertilizers and pesticides?
A: Yes. Oligo-chitosan is compatible with most fertilizers and pesticides.
